  • Approximate comparative fuel economy of various vehicle types

Below is a super-basic study I did this evening of relative fuel economy of a few different transport options. This was very unscientific, in a few cases the numbers were guesstimates, or averages of averages, so is not a conclusive study in any way… Also, it doesn’t take into account the fact that not all gallons are created equal, and that different fuels (avgas vs regular unleaded, for example) must surely have significantly different environmental impact. The numbers come from various sources, some official some not, gathered in an hour or so.

The last column is a measure of Average Miles Per Gallon Per Seat, which I am using as the comparative measure of fuel economy here:

    Vehicle Name Fuel
    Capacity
    (gal)
    MPG Range (mi) Typical
    Seats
    Max
    Seats
    Typical
    mpg/seat
    Max
    mpg/seat
    Ave
    mpg/seat
    Toyota Prius 11.9 46 547.4 1 4 46 184 115
    NYC Bus - 2.6 - 10 45 26 117 71.5
    Kawasaki Ninja EX250R - 67.5 - 1 1 67.5 67.5 67.5
    Hyundai Santa Fe 19.8 21 415.8 1 5 21 105 63
    Boeing 747-300 52410 0.1 7705 200 454 29.4 66.7 48
    Cessna 172 53 14.9 790 2 4 29.8 59.6 44.7
    Eclipse500 VLJ 251 6 1496 2 4 11.9 23.8 17.8
    Lamborghini Murcielago - 11.4 - 1 2 11.4 22.9 17.1
    Gulfstream G500 5203.3 1.3 6674.8 5 12 6.4 15.4 10.9

Perhaps unsurprisingly the Gulfstream and the Lamborghini are horrendously inefficient modes of transport. I was surprised that the Boeing and the Cessna were pretty much comparable. If the NYC bus average occupancy is indeed between 10-45 then the hulking smoky buses do actually deliver pretty good fuel economy per seat. Also, there isn’t a massive differential between the Eclipse “efficient” VLJ and the Gulfstream. These numbers strike me as unlikely and I eagerly await the aviation and energy experts’ opinions in the comments.
