NYC: A month later

So, its been a month working in NYC. I can’t say ‘living’ because my home is really still in Philly. Well the burbs of Philly. I have been commuting between living with my brother in our new house in Huntington, NYC and Philly. I have been on enough trains to know which are the good seats, to identify and avoid ‘loud talkers’ from their general demeanor, and to read no less than 5 books. Thats five books, people. Not picture books either. No Dick and Jane Go To The Movies. Books on dead dogs and bad people in Grahamstown, newage and oldage idealists in California, haggard and dogged adventurers and oddly wired gentlemen. But I digress.

First, I love my new job. I really do. The chaos we have been through during this move has been worth it. And we have been through hell. Contract dodgers, legal battles, straining friendships, packing, panicking, budgeting, travelling, missing each other. You name it. You want to know how bad it has gotten? I have a lawyer. And I have spoken to three lawyers in the past month. Thats my yardstick of a messy time. To top it all off, summer tried to kill me in the subways of Manhattan for a while there… literally. Have you ever experienced 43C (110F) in a subteranean maze? In fact, have you ever experienced 43C at all? Even voluntarily in a sauna? If you have, then you will know the feeling of your blood reaching a rapid boil and your body releasing sweat by the megagallon. This is a fine way to arrive at work at 9am.

So, here is the gist of it.. Job: very good. Michelle: miss her a lot during the week. House #1: not sold yet, but working on it. House #2: nearing completion of legal maze that is NY. New York City: The city of a thousand delis, incredible concerts, a bazillion people, good public transport but no open wireless access points. On the public transport issue: When I first tried to navigate the NY Metro, I got lost. I thought, “Boy does this suck compared to The Tube”. But I have to say that somehow the Metro system now makes sense to me. When I am down near Wall Street I can pick from about 4 different lines to catch within 5 mins walk. I guess it is, after all, a rather small island when it comes down to it.

I am really looking forward to getting a life together again in Long Island. We both feel kinda homeless right now.

So anyway, thats my story so far. I thought I would be blogging a lot more than I have been. When Cingular get their asses in gear and release the Novatel ExpressCard card, I will be blogging from the train. Till then, go read someone else’s blog, then come back refreshed and ready to critisize me.

Commuter Day #1

So today I joined the not so elite group of “NYC Commuters”. I took the 8:22am from Huntington on the busiest railroad in North America to Penn Station. Not a bad ride on the LIRR actually. Got a seat, nice aircon, no problems. Then I headed over 2 blocks to the Metro and headed downtown for 10 mins on the N Train. It was incredibly damn friggin hot. And I am told the worst summer has to offer is ahead of us still. Joy! But I am happy to be here, this city just pulsates energy and it’s exciting.
